Is This the Right Book for Me?
Should I get this Naples & the Amalfi Coast book in addition to Rick's complete Italy guidebook or his Best of Italy guidebook??
Probably not. If you're only spending a few days in Naples and/or the Amalfi Coast, as part of a longer trip in Italy, the Naples and Amalfi Coast chapters of either Italy guidebook are all you're likely to need.
If, however, you're spending at least a week in the region, the extra information in Rick Steves Naples & the Amalfi Coast can be worthwhile. It offers more in-depth sightseeing information and more specifics on shopping and nightlife. The Naples & the Amalfi Coast guidebook includes thorough coverage of Herculaneum, Vesuvius, and Capri, which appear only as sidebars in our Rick Steves Italy guidebook (though Capri is included in the Best of Italy). It also features a chapter on Paestum. Other information is generally the same, especially compared to the complete Italy guidebook, which includes nearly all the hotels, restaurants, and nitty-gritty practical advice for Naples and nearby destinations that you'll find in the country book. (But compared to Rick Steves Best of Italy, the Naples & the Amalfi Coast guidebook does have a few more hotel and restaurant listings, as well as more comprehensive coverage of day-trip options.)
